A loud pounding on her door had Skye sitting up, groaning, holding her head with both hands.

“Skye. Wake up. It’s time to leave for the office.”

Gage?

The pounding started again when she didn’t respond.

“I’m up,” she ground out, wincing as she rolled out of bed and padded to the door. Pulling it open, she didn’t hesitate to grab the cup of coffee Gage held out. Turning, she didn’t say another word as she disappeared into the bathroom.

“What, no morning kiss?”

“Later,” she called, her voice hoarse as she closed the door behind her.

Gage chuckled as he settled into an overstuffed chair. The sound of the shower and an occasional groan could be heard through the bathroom door as he scanned a copy of the national newspaper he’d picked up outside her door.

When they’d returned from the coffee shop the night before, she’d invited him to stay. Refusing her hadn’t been easy. Skye had made it plain she disagreed with his decision to tuck her in with a couple kisses, then leave.

Staying wasn’t smart. Gage didn’t want to see confusion or regret on her face if she woke to see him sharing her bed. When they made love the next time, both would be certain of what was happening.

Another loud groan drew his attention away from the night before to the newspaper in his hand. A few minutes later, Skye shoved the door open, steam flowing out of the bathroom.

Gage didn’t look up from the story he read about renewed violence in Mexico. “Take a couple aspirin.”

Skimming the story, he focused on the part about drug wars in the central part of the country. There had been an uptick in kidnappings and murder. Standing, he pulled his phone from his pocket, then punched in a number. Walking to the other side of the room, he kept his back to the bathroom.

“Ivan, it’s Gage. I’ll be in Cold Creek until Monday. Checking on the status in León. If you need help, anything at all, let me know.” Turning, he saw Skye, still wrapped in a towel, standing a few feet away.

“León. That’s where Kade’s mother lives, right?”

“Yes.”

He walked up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders, drawing her in for a kiss. The instant his mouth touched hers, his body responded. Her hands inched up his arms, circling his neck, urging him to deepen the kiss.

One hand roamed her back while the other moved to the knot in front where she’d secured the towel. One tug and the knot gave way, dropping to pool at her feet. Groaning, he lifted her into his arms, carrying her to the bed. Laying her down, Gage let his gaze wander over her, his heart beating so hard as to be almost painful.

“You are so beautiful.” His deep, uneven voice washed over her as his hand moved along her calf, up her thigh, and over a hip, resting on her waist.

“You know, this doesn’t work as well when one of us still has clothes on.”

Mumbling a curse, he drew the back of his hand down her cheek.
